Module: 1.4.1v Virtual Module: Using Theme Webs for Curriculum Planning
This module was developed as part of the this module was developed as part of the California Department of Education/Child Development Division School-Age Training Project, revised in 2016 to incorporate social-emotional learning, character building and Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California and specific language, examples and tips for summer and year-round learning programs, and adapted for virtual training delivery in 2021 as part of the Virtual Training Project.
During this training, participants will learn about the six developmental categories and how to plan thematic curriculum for out-of-school-time programs.
NOTE: Participants must download and install the Zoom app prior to the session. Be sure to test your technology ahead of time and join the call at least 5 minutes early. (If you don't have access to a video-capable device, you may join on audio only using the phone numbers in the confirmation email.). Lastly, participants will be utilizing Google Docs during the session.
In this training, participants will:
- learn about the developmental categories
- use theme webbing to plan and organize program activities for out-of-school time and expanded learning programs
Content Overview:
How Do You Plan?
Participants will reflect on the way they plan for their programs.
Group Web
Discussion of the six developmental categories: cognitive, language development, social-emotional, ethics, physical, and creative. Practice on the development of a Theme Web around the topic of Oceans.
On Your Own: Small Group Web
Participants work in small groups and create a theme web on a topic of their choice, being sure to have a minimum of 3 activities in each of the developmental categories.
