During this training, participants will explore the two ways young people can experience harm that can impact their mental health and well-being. The role of out-school time staff in supporting young people heal from harm starts with understanding importance of recognizing young people’s culture and understanding the types of power that impact youth and staff. From this point, staff can begin to support young people and themselves with healing, which starts with creating space for self-care.

NOTE: Participants must download and install the Zoom app prior to the session. Be sure to test your technology ahead of time and join the call at least 5 minutes early. (If you don't have access to a video-capable device, you may join on audio only using the phone numbers in the confirmation email.). Lastly, participants will be utilizing Google Docs during the session.

Content Overview

What is Culture? 

Participants will engage in an activity that reframes working with youth as cross-cultural work.

Power Analysis 

Participants will explore how historical, institutional and people power operate. 

Creating a Circle of Care  

Participants will identify practices that are supportive in managing self wellness and youth wellness while navigating systems of power.
