This module was developed as part of the California Department of Education/Child Development Division School-Age Training Project, revised in 2016 to incorporate social-emotional learning, character building and Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California, and adapted for virtual delivery as part of the Virtual Training Project.

During this training, participants will reflect on their own identity, and address the extent to which culture impacts their lives and the lives of children/youth. They will also develop their social awareness skills by critically evaluating the ways in which individuals of diverse backgrounds relate to one another.

Content Overview: 

Guess Who?

Shows participants how specific and individual knowledge about a person can be utilized to better interact with and serve that person. In addition, serves as an example of how to avoid stereotyping people or making overgeneralizations about culturally diverse people.

Who am I?

Participants indicate and share the significance of culture in their own lives. This provides a basis to discuss similarities and differences in the meaning and impact of culture across various individuals and groups.

Step Into Your Identity

Participants indicate the extent to which they identify “as” or “with” various cultural groups and then discuss the basis for their identifications.

Levels of Engagement

Participants critically evaluate how they relate to culturally diverse groups. This provides a foundation to examine relationships between diverse groups at their site.
