Module: 1.1.2v Virtual Module: Building Relationships with Children and Youth
This module supports participants in exploring how to build positive, meaningful relationships with children and youth, in order to plan programs that best meet their needs and support the development of social-emotional skills.
This module was developed as part of the California Department of Education/Child Development Division School-Age Training Project and revised in 2016 to incorporate social-emotional learning and Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California, revised in 2019 to incorporate language to support mental health and wellness and adapted for virtual training delivery as part of the Virtual Training Project.
NOTE: Participants must download and install the Zoom app prior to the session. Be sure to test your technology ahead of time and join the call at least 5 minutes early. (If you don't have access to a video-capable device, you may join on audio only using the phone numbers in the confirmation email.). Lastly, participants will be utilizing Google Docs during the session.
In this training participants will:
- Be able to utilize tips, techniques and activities to help them build relationships with children and youth.
- Understand the importance of taking the time to build positive relationships with children and youth that support the development of social-emotional skills.

Participants will identify what constitutes a positive relationship between program staff and youth, behaviors that contribute to building relationships, and ways to develop relationships.

This energizing activity serves as a tool to demonstrate the kinds of activities that help build positive relationships between staff and youth.
Action Plan
Participants will learn and share concrete ideas for holding themselves responsible for putting their ideas into action at their programs.
Training Length: 2 hours
