During this module, participants will learn about how young people’s responses affect personal emotion and behavior, how to introduce and implement group agreements, and share current strategies and resources to support the development of young people’s self-awareness and self-management skills.

This module was developed as part of the Expanded Learning 360/365 project, revised in 2016 to specific language, examples and tips for summer and year-round learning programs, revised in 2019 to incorporate language to support mental health and wellness, and adapted for virtual training delivery as part of the Virtual Training Project.

NOTE: Participants must download and install the Zoom app prior to the session. Be sure to test your technology ahead of time and join the call at least 5 minutes early. (If you don't have access to a video-capable device, you may join on audio only using the phone numbers in the confirmation email.). Lastly, participants will be utilizing Google Docs during the sessio

In this training participants will:

Content Overview:

Topic Introduction and Key Concepts 

Participants will review key concepts from module 4.6.1 Social-Emotional Learning and Enhancing Quality that are relevant to the virtual training.

Establishing Agreements

Participants will review a list of group agreements and consider how they might be used to support the development of self-awareness and self-management.

Exploring Personal Competence 

Participants will learn what protective factors are, engage in some self-reflection around how they model, and support social-emotional skills of young people in their program. Social-emotional learning skills are protective factors that support a young person's well-being and mental health.

Strategies to Implement

Participants will review one strategy to support self-awareness and self-management in depth and have an opportunity to share any strategies they utilize to support self-awareness and self-management.

Program Practice and Resource Sharing 

Participants will share and discuss the strategies identified, current practices, and resources for supporting youth in self-management and self-awareness.
