Module: 4.6.2v Virtual Module: Exploring Our Own Social-Emotional Learning Skills
During this module, participants will explore program practices that support social-emotional skill development. Participants will use their results from a self-reflection tool to identify actions they can take to strengthen their abilities to support social-emotional skill development.
This module was developed as part of the Expanded Learning 360/365 project, revised in 2016 to specific language, examples and tips for summer and year-round learning programs, revised in 2019 to incorporate specific language to support mental health and wellness, and adapted for virtual training delivery as part of the Virtual Training Project.
NOTE: Participants must download and install the Zoom app prior to the session. Be sure to test your technology ahead of time and join the call at least 5 minutes early. (If you don't have access to a video-capable device, you may join on audio only using the phone numbers in the confirmation email.). Lastly, participants will be utilizing Google Docs during the session.
In this training participants will:
- Reflect on own current practices and personal competencies that support social-emotional skill development
- Formulate a plan of action to strengthen abilities to support the social-emotional skills of young people
Content Overview:
Topic Introduction and Key Concepts
Participants will review key concepts from module 4.6.1 Social-Emotional Learning and Enhancing Quality that are relevant to the virtual training.
Skills in Action Activity
Participants will view a strategy that supports social-emotional learning in action and then discuss what they saw in small groups.
Integrating the Strategy
Participants will reflect on major components of the strategy and how they can integrate parts of it in their own program activities.
Self-Reflection and Action Planning
Participants will learn what protective factors are and engage in some self-reflection around how they model and support social-emotional learning skills of young people in their program. Social-emotional learning skills are protective factors that support a young person's well-being and mental health.
