Module: 4.5.1v Virtual Module: Understanding Mental Health and Wellness for Youth and Adults
During this module, participants will understand the connection between our internal brain function and the behaviors we observe in programs as well as understand the impact stress and trauma has on a young person.
This module was developed as a part of the OST Wellness Network and adapted for virtual training delivery as part of the Virtual Training Project.
NOTE: Participants must download and install the Zoom app prior to the session. Be sure to test your technology ahead of time and join the call at least 5 minutes early. (If you don't have access to a video-capable device, you may join on audio only using the phone numbers in the confirmation email.). Lastly, participants will be utilizing Google Docs during the session.
In this training participants will:
- Gain a foundational understanding of how trauma and mental health impact young people’s behaviors, needs, and capacity to learn
- Reflect on their own mental health and wellness
Content Overview:
Topic Introduction and Key Concepts
Participants will spend time reviewing the key concepts for this virtual training.
The Brain amd Impact on Behavior
Participants will learn about internal brain function and its connection to the behaviors they observe in youth.
Spectrum of Stress
Participants will understand the impact of toxic stress and traumatic events on a young person’s internal systems and the behaviors they observe in programs.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Exploration
Participants will engage in an activity to learn about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), understand the types of experiences that are included in ACEs, and understand the role staff play in supporting a young person who has one or more ACEs.
Commitments and Intentions
Participants will have an opportunity to share one intention they have to better support their youth and themselves
