Module: 1.6.2 Building a Classroom Community
This module was revised in 2017 to incorporate specific language, examples and tips for summer and year-round learning programs.
During this training, participants will learn about creating a classroom environment that reflects a community. Participants will discuss how afterschool programs take a holistic approach to education and what affect that can have on learning.
In this training participants will:
- Explore what it means to create a community within a classroom and strategies they can use to create such an environment
- Apply youth development principles to the concept of holistic education and determine for themselves the kind of community they need as a youth worker
Content Overview:
What is a Community
Participants will first reflect upon their personal definition of “community” and then as a group, create a working definition that encompasses everyone’s vision of “community.”
My Favorite Teacher/Mentor
Have participants pair up and share with each other their favorite teacher/mentor/coach/adult and what it was that made that adult so special to them. Participants will share out on a number of questions that will illustrate the kind of support we remember and think of positively.
